Frequently Asked Questions & Answers
How long do culture tests take ?
Cultures naturally take 24–72 hours. Most urine and stool cultures are ready in 48 hours; blood cultures may take up to 72 hours; sensitivity testing adds another 24 hours. This time is needed for organisms to grow and be accurately identified — faster turnaround usually means a less reliable result.
What's the difference between a CUE and a Urine Culture ?
A Complete Urine Examination (CUE) is a routine microscopic and chemical analysis that detects infection markers, sugar, protein and cells — ready the same day. A Urine Culture grows the actual bacteria from your sample to identify the exact organism and which antibiotics will work — takes 48 hours. Doctors often prescribe both together for suspected UTIs.
How is a urine sample collected for culture ?
Urine culture requires a mid-stream clean-catch sample — you’ll be given a sterile container and instructions to clean the area, pass the first portion of urine into the toilet, then collect the middle portion. This prevents skin bacteria from contaminating the sample. Our staff will explain the process at the centre.
What is antibiotic sensitivity testing ?
Once an organism is identified, the lab tests it against a panel of antibiotics to see which ones kill or stop it from growing. The report lists each antibiotic as “Sensitive” (will work), “Resistant” (won’t work) or “Intermediate”. This helps your doctor prescribe the most effective antibiotic and avoid unnecessary antibiotic use.
When should I get a Fever Profile ?
What does an ANC (Antenatal) Profile include ?
The ANC profile is a comprehensive screening panel for pregnant women that typically includes blood group, CBC, blood sugar, thyroid, HBsAg, HIV, VDRL, urine analysis and Rh factor — all the routine investigations recommended in the first trimester.
Do I need to fast for stool or urine tests ?
No fasting is needed for urine, stool, swab or culture tests. For routine urine, a fresh morning sample gives the best results. For stool occult blood, avoid red meat and certain medications for 3 days before — our team will give you specific instructions.
Are walk-ins accepted ?
Yes, walk-ins are welcome for all routine microbiology tests. For specialised collections like CSF or fluid testing that require a doctor’s procedure, please call ahead on 079972 90666.
How will I receive my culture report ?
You can collect the printed report from the centre once ready, or receive a digital PDF via WhatsApp or email on request. For positive culture results, our team may call you to ensure you receive the report promptly.
